Inderbir S. Gill is an acclaimed surgeon and innovator who stands as one of the world’s top urologists. He pioneered the field of robotic and laparoscopic surgery for urologic cancers, providing patients with high-tech, minimally invasive alternatives to traditional procedures. Under his extraordinary leadership, USC’s department of urology has blossomed into a world-class program and a cornerstone of the university’s medical enterprise.

Professor Gill’s revolutionary impact on clinical and surgical innovation derives from his determination to confront complex surgical dilemmas in patients with cancer. His legacy encompasses a litany of major medical breakthroughs. He was the first to perform advanced bladder cancer surgery completely inside the body, to remove a transplant donor kidney exclusively through the belly button, and to perform robotic surgery for large kidney cancer thrombi growing into the liver. He and his team have operated on more than 13,000 patients to date, the world’s single largest aggregate experience.

Professor Gill has been recognized with numerous distinctions. His accolades include the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award from the president of India and the prestigious St. Paul’s Medal from the British Association of Urological Surgeons. A prolific scholar, he has published more than 700 peer-reviewed scientific papers and eight textbooks, and is a principal investigator on three grants from the National Institutes of Health. His work has garnered more than 26,000 citations, and his H-index of 92 makes him the world’s second most cited urologist in active surgical practice.

For his mastery of the art of healing, and his efforts to advance surgical technology, the University of Southern California proudly recognizes Inderbir S. Gill as a Distinguished Professor the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
