Richard B. Chase’s long and distinguished tenure at USC has proved crucial to our comprehension of the human relationships that define our economic system. Regarded as a trailblazer in the field of service management, he also stands as one of the world’s foremost experts in service operations and customer relations. In addition to numerous scholarly papers and articles, he has co-authored seminal texts regarding operations management—works that continue to influence generations of business leaders.
Since the earliest days of his career, Professor Chase cultivated a reputation as an innovative thinker. One of his first papers to appear in the Harvard Business Review introduced the concept of customer contact as a critical dimension for understanding service management. Though published in a journal oriented toward managers, the paper was cited by scholars for its significant impact on research and teaching. In subsequent years, Professor Chase’s work gained acclaim for its unique ability to appeal to academics and practitioners alike, and has garnered honors such as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Production and Operations Management Society. Such recognition stands as a testament to the creativity, accessibility, and persuasiveness of his ideas.
Professor Chase has made numerous contributions to our university and its Marshall School. He developed and taught one of the first courses in service operations offered at any business school, and launched a center for operations excellence that brought considerable renown to USC. For more than three decades, students and colleagues have praised Professor Chase’s stellar mentoring and leadership skills as Marshall’s operations management department experienced significant growth—an impressive legacy that has brought distinction to our university and benefited the entire business community.
For his role as a founder of the service operations management field, and his celebrated academic accomplishments, the University of Southern California is proud to honor Richard B. Chase with the USC Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award.
