Professor Emeritus of Preventive Medicine
Keck School of Medicine of USC
A valued colleague and mentor at USC for more than 45 years, Stanley Azen is responsible for elevating a critical set of tools used in the evaluation and improvement of medical research. At a time when the importance of biostatistics was not fully recognized in the medical field, he developed one of our nation’s leading research groups in this discipline. Professor Azen also has championed collaborative research across a broad variety of fields, which in turn helped facilitate a number of USC’s signature medical investigations.
Professor Azen’s remarkable vision and passion for education resonate throughout the Keck School. He earned a reputation as a “founding father” of graduate studies in the department of preventive medicine through his steadfast commitment to Keck’s teaching mission, establishing degree programs in biostatistics, epidemiology, and medical research. His scholarly influence ranges far and wide, encompassing more than 400 peer-reviewed papers and two textbooks that have deftly guided modern medical professionals—including current USC faculty.
In addition to his stellar scholarship, Professor Azen has worked to enhance people’s perception of statisticians. He has sought unexpected ways to connect with his audience, gaining attention (and plenty of smiles) for his jokes and whimsical illustrations that help explain complex concepts in biostatistics. Professor Azen is also an accomplished pianist with three produced CDs. Drawing on his musical talents, he has brightened significant moments in the lives of his students and faculty colleagues, even volunteering to play piano at dozens of graduate student weddings.
Professor Azen has left his mark broadly across USC and throughout the biomedical research community. His foresight and tireless dedication continue to bolster our university’s eminence in research and patient care, as his work has touched lives around the world.
In tribute to his pioneering efforts in biostatistics, and his enduring enthusiasm for medical inquiry, the University of Southern California is proud to honor Stanley Azen with the USC Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award.
